There’s no need to convince anybody about the beauty of the major Polish cities. But if you step off the beaten path for a moment and explore the small Polish towns, you’ll find genuine gems on your way. One of them is definitely Kazimierz Dolny, located just a stone’s throw away from the capital city.
Once you get to Kazimierz Dolny, you’ll understand right away why so many people are head over heels in love with it. This picturesque city is often called “the town of the artists”, which doesn’t surprise us. It’s hard not to be enchanted by its beauty. Every August Kazimierz hosts a very popular film and arts festival called the Two Riversides.
Apart from the buzzing market square, fantastic art galleries, cozy cafes and exquisite restaurants, this small town has a lot to offer. It is a great destination both for those who want to relax and who like to stay active. What can you do in Kazimierz?
Enjoy the view
Climb up a cobbled street and visit the ruins of a medieval castle. The upper part of the castle called the Tower is one of the oldest brick fortifications in Poland and it offers a stunning view over the entire Vistula valley. The castle is nowadays sometimes used as a concert hall.
The view over Kazimierz Dolny is also amazing from the top of the Hill of the Three Crosses. The crosses have been erected to commemorate the victims of the cholera epidemic in the beginning of the 18th century.
Go hiking
The surrounding area of the town is very attractive due to the richness of nature and landscape. Kazimierz Dolny is a very unique place, where you can find quiet natural havens almost next to the busy market square. It is one of the best places to see the loess gorges that the Lublin Upland is famous for. One of the most popular is the Roots Gorge, with uncovered roots of the trees sticking out from the edges of the gorge.
Walk the Vistula boulevard
The Vistula boulevard is a scenic and romantic idea for a walk. It stretches along the entire town and offers a fantastic view on the castle and the river, with moored boats along the coast. It is also possible to take a boat cruise on the Vistula river.
Eat a rooster
Not a real rooster, of course. We’re talking about the famous bread rooster from the artistic Sarzyński bakery. It has become the symbol of Kazimierz Dolny.
