A Journey Deep Beneath Poland: Visiting the Wieliczka Salt Mine

Just a short drive from Kraków lies one of Poland’s most remarkable treasures, the Wieliczka Salt Mine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visiting this place feels like stepping into another world, one made entirely of salt, from glittering chandeliers to carved chapels and winding tunnels that stretch for about 245 kilometers.

A UNESCO Gem Full of Wonder

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of the oldest in the world, dating back to the 13th century. For centuries, it supplied salt (once known as “white gold") to kings and merchants across Europe. Today, it stands as a monument to human ingenuity and perseverance. The highlight for many visitors is the breathtaking Chapel of St. Kinga, entirely sculpted in salt by the miners themselves. It’s not just impressive. It’s magical.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Your visit starts with a descent down about 800 steps altogether, spiraling deeper into the cool, salty air of the mine. Luckily, the stairs are comfortable and have railings. And don’t worry, you won’t need to climb back up! The return to the surface is done comfortably by elevator.

Sightseeing for individual tourists is always done in guided groups of up to 40 people, and every visitor receives a tour guide system with earphones to make sure you can clearly hear your knowledgeable guide, even in the larger chambers. The guides bring the stories of the mine to life – from the legends of the miners to fascinating facts about how salt was once extracted.

What to Wear

The mine stays at a steady temperature of around 17–18°C (63–65°F) all year round, so we recommend bringing a light jacket or sweater, even in summer. Comfortable shoes are essential. There’s quite a bit of walking involved (the tourist route is about 3.5 km long), but it’s all worth it!
